The Gangster, the Cop, and the Devil is a 2019 South Korean action thriller film directed by Lee Won Tae. The film stars Ma Dong Seok (as the gangster, Jang Dong Soo), Kim Mu Yeol (as the cop, Jung Tae Suk) and Kim Sung Kyu (the villain, also known as the devil, Kang Kyung Ho). It is a movie with 90% and above rated on rotten tomatoes for both Tomatometer and audience score. With this very high rating, you would probably know that it is a great movie.

I am a big fan of thrillers. I enjoyed watching, reading and listening to thriller or true crime stories. Especially South Korean thriller stories. I personally think that South Korean has one of the best plots in thriller films or tv shows. Their plots are so well written and produced that you don't see certain thing is coming and is truly unexpected. This makes them have a great plot twist. But to be honest, I chose to watch The Gangster, the Cop, and the Devil only because my favorite South Korean actor, Kim Mu Yeol is in it. I first knew Kim Mu Yeol from his previous role as a private detective in a mystery thriller film, Forgotten. He acted his role so perfectly and brilliantly that it will make you go searching for other movies that he is ever or will be in. So when I found out that Kim Mu Yeol is one of the main roles in The Gangster, the Cop, and the Devil, I knew I had to watch it. What is even better is that one of the best actors in South Korea, Ma Dong Seok, who is known for his role in the famous zombie film Train to Busan, is in the movie. Knowing that these two actors will be acting in it, surely it will be a great movie.

Supposedly, this was inspired by real events from a decade ago. The 2015 setting is mentioned, however, it is barely relevant.

When I first saw the title I thought it would be a typical cop going after the gangsters and "devils". Never once in my thought that a gangster, a famous gangster in town and feared by everyone, would be working together with a cop to solve a case. Cops usually go hunting down gangsters and throw them in jail. However, this movie is about a gangster named Dong Soo and a cop, Tae Suk, decided to become a team and search for a serial murderer who murdered a few people and even tried to kill Dong Soo but unfortunately failed to do so.

The color-grading for The Gangster, the Cop, and the Devil is pretty dark and bluish, has a pretty contrast, almost like a typical action movie kind of color. However, don't be fooled by the colors and the violent intro of the movie (where Dong Soo punch a not so regular punching bag with a man bleeding inside) the movie is full of comedy elements as well. Though Dong Soo and Tae Suk both have opposite characteristics, their relationship and chemistry throughout the movie is really great. They started off really cold, as to how usually a cop sees a suspect, but slowly both of their trust slowly build and they are able to work together well to catch the serial murderer. Not only that, the fact that the movie is really fast-paced impressed me. I usually would stop halfway through movie if it drags too long in front and gets boring, but The Gangster, the Cop, and the Devil moves really fast and every detail in the film attracts me to keep watching and keep looking forward to what will happen next, which I think is one of the movie's strong point.

As you can tell by the title of this movie, there are three main characters. I had a lot of questions and is always wondering and curious. Will the gangster be caught due to all the high suspicions towards him as the "devil" and the real "devil" will go on life walking on the streets as a free "innocent" man? Or the cop gets fired for solving a case underground? It kept me wondering who would survive till the end and I can say the production team did a great job at confusing the viewers and adding amazing plot twists.
